Among My Souvenirs

There’s nothing left for me
Of days that used to be
They’re just a memory
Among my souvenirs
Some letters sad and blue
A photograph or two
I see a rose from you
Among my souvenirs
A few more tokens rest
Within my treasure chest
And, though they do their best
To give me consolation
I count them all apart
And, as the teardrops start
I find a broken heart
Among my souvenirs
I count them all apart
And, as the teardrops start
I find a broken heart
Among my souvenirs.

“If I Could”

If I Could
I’d protect you from the sadness in your eyes
give you courage in a world of compromise
yes I would
If I could

I would teach you all the things I’ve never learned
and I’d help you cross the bridges that I’ve burned
yes I would
if I could

I would try to shield your innocence from time
but the part of life I gave you isn’t mine
I’ve watched you grow
so I could let you go
if I could

I would help you make it through the hungry years
but I know that I can never cry your tears
but I would
if I could

if I live in a time and place where you don’t want to be
you don’t have to walk along this road with me
my yesterday won’t have to be your way

if I knew

how I’d try to change the world I brought you to
and there isn’t very much that I can do
but I would
if I could
if I could

I would try to shield your innocence from time
but that part of life I gave you isn’t mine
I watched you grow so I could let you go
if, if I could

I would help you make it through those hungry years
but I know that I can never cry your tears
but I would
if I could

yes I would
yes I would
if I could.

I Am a Rock

A winter’s day
In a deep and dark
December
I am alone
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow
I am a rock
I am an island

I’ve built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain
It’s laughter and it’s loving I disdain
I am a rock
I am an island

Don’t talk of love
But I’ve heard the words before
It’s sleeping in my memory
I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried
I am a rock
I am an island

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
I am a rock
I am an island

And a rock feels no pain
And an island never cries.

Suddenly

One morning, in 1817, Beethoven
realized that he’s now deaf. I can see him
sitting, almost crying, as he tries to
hear the sound of his piano keys.
When you ask me why don’t I trust people
more often, I tell you a story
about this man who killed his wife,
and then jumped from the Golden
bridge with his newborn child.
If human relations were a subject,
then I am the student who secretly
cries in the bathroom because he can’t
understand what the fuck is happening.
You think you know anxiety? Imagine
thousands of pebbles in your feet. Imagine
drinking a salty lake. Imagine starting
a forest fire that destroys the whole goddamn
town. I say I can’t handle love. It feels alien.
It feels like sleeping in a bed that’s not mine.
And you say, look at Beethoven — he composed
magical tunes even after turning deaf. What makes
you think you can’t overcome whatever the
hell this is? And I say you won’t get it,
because to you, believing comes easy.
Did you know Beethoven loved a woman,
but couldn’t marry her because she was rich?
So, he composed Moonlight Sonata wishing
someday she’ll give it a listen.
And I keep wasting ink writing
letters that you’ll never read.
I think Beethoven knew what I mean.

Riff

Did you ever hear the song “Beautiful in White?” If not, you’re lucky. This one is a torture. Worse than Mariah Carey or Björk (Yeah personal choices people, don’t get on your high horses) The song is flat and so annoyingly repetitive it drives me crazy.  This one phrase in particular: “You look so beautiful in white, you look so beautiful in white, you look so beautiful in whiiiiiiiittte….  If I am in prison and they want me to confess to anything, all they have to do is play this song 24/7 and I will probably end up hanging myself.

But you know what’s remarkable about music like these? They get trapped in your brain and stick with you for days playing that one particular part you hate the most. Catchy songs aren’t always good people. See for yourself if you don’t believe me.

Meddle

Why this word prompt reminds me of two things: One is the Echoes, a signature track from Pink Floyd’s Meddle album which probably a reminiscent of my former life with my ex. The song goes like this:

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
No one speaks
And no one tries
No one flies around the sun

Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky.

It was written by Dave Gilmour, Nick Mason, Rick Wright. A group effort with lyrical contributions from each member.

Here is another song that reminds me of today’s prompt. It is appropriately titled Meddle.

I remember all the things she did before
I remember all the times she cried
I remember all the things you promised her
I know it hurt, I remember all the times you lied

Don’t meddle with her heart, meddle with her mind
Meddle with the things that are inside
You don’t know what you’ll find
You don’t know what she hides

So don’t go messing with her heart or messing with her mind
Or messing with the things that are inside
You don’t know what you’ll find
You don’t know what she hides

She still remembers like it’s yesterday
She still remembers you so well
She still remembers all the things you saw forever more
She still remembers but won’t tell

‘Cause she’s a mixed up girl in a mixed up world
And you know she don’t mean any harm
So please understand if you take her hand
You’ll get much more than you bargained for…

The last stanza kind of reminds me of myself 😀

Anticipation

One swift motion

you checked the right side
forgot about the left
you checked behind you
forgot about in front

you didn’t see it coming
you were already dead
there was no way
you could have prepared

spinning it’s web it lies in wait
in the blink of an eye it’s too late
and the ones who thought they could handle it all
they’re the first to fall

never underestimate your enemy
you’ve got to keep your head
in one swift motion it could happen so fast
you may not even know you are already dead

you checked the right side
forgot about the left
you checked behind you
forgot about in front

you didn’t see it coming
you were already dead
there was no way
you could have prepared

the dragons stir deep in their hive
sniffing the air they come alive
each step you take could be your last
just pray that it happens fast

don’t go down that hall
you may not like what you find
don’t open that door
you may not like what’s inside

and everything you’ve done
and every fight you’ve won
and everything you’ve seen: it won’t mean a thing
because you can’t track it
can’t stop it
can’t escape it
can’t outgun it
can’t fathom where it is:
but look behind you
cause there it is

In Another Lifetime

This song sums up my past affairs (yes affairs plural) and for the most part, the greatest times of my life. They are echos now, but those brief moments had given me unforgettable memories I often revisit when I need a place to hide or something to sustains me when the weather is bad the company dull the evenings dark and the morning cold.

Someone once asked me:

I said:

And I added for a good measure:

Besides…

Labels are for filing. Labels are for clothing. Labels are not for people.

Which reminds me of what Juliet said to Romeo on that fateful night. You know…

“What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”

But for the sake of an argument let’s mess up things a bit…

I read in a book once that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but I’ve never been able to believe it. I don’t believe a rose WOULD be as nice if it was called a thistle or a skunk cabbage.

― L.M. Montgomery

Just because we associated them names first with other things. If we reverse the order…

Anyway, in the end…
