Do you have a favorite quote that you return to again and again? What is it, and why does it move you?
That would be a quote from Erik The Phantom as Susan Kay wrote it. Strange that this specific quote is nowhere to be found elsewhere but in the book itself. It is not included in the list of quotes from the same story/movie in Goodreads or BrainyQuotes. You must read the whole book to find it. I like this particular passage because it is dark, dry, cynical and oh, so true. It goes like this:
“Happiness is like the first intoxication of morphine. It doesn’t last very long.”
There is also another quote from the same character in the same story that I like a lot. Again, it exists nowhere but in the book. It says:
“Time ravages beauty and preserves plain(li)ness.”
One of my favorite quotes is by a wonderful musician named Dave Swarbrick. We can all get cynical about music sometimes, saying things aren’t like they used to be, and expressing our dislike for things but he has a great quote that keeps me grounded. He said simply-‘You can do anything you want to music. It doesn’t mind.’
It floored me when I first heard it!

An open invitation for/to abuse. I know certain people who talk like than between the lines.

The quote… if you can do anything to something and it doesn’t mind… i interpret it as open invitation sky is the limit. Don’t mind my twisted logic.

Oh yes, sorry I see that now. Sky is the limit I think is exactly the basic meaning of it!

I can understand. I once had a notebook full of quotation I copied from books. I guess those I can remember must have struck a cord in me or otherwise they will not be engraved in my memory.

I don’t think I have a favourite quote but just these little lines or phrases, more like dialogues that I pick up from God knows where and the ones I use often! But they are in Hindi, and translation would mean them losing their charm!

I still want to hear it 🙂 We have them too in our language and I can translate the words literally but the exact meaning and punchline are like you said lost in translation.

Eli Weisel, Night (1960)
“Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed….Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.”
