Thoughts Of The Day

When I was twelve years old, the world was my magic lantern, and by its green spirit glow I saw the past, the present and into the future. You probably did too; you just don’t recall it.

See, this is my opinion: we all start out knowing magic.

We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us. We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get the magic educated right out of our souls. We get it churched out, spanked out, washed out, and combed out. We get put on the straight and narrow and told to be responsible. Told to act our age. Told to grow up, for God’s sake.

And you know why we were told that? Because the people doing the telling were afraid of our wildness and youth, and because the magic we knew made them ashamed and sad of what they’d allowed to wither in themselves.

    1. They think behaving accordingly goes with age and growing up. My father always said there are no rabid puppies, only big dogs. For a long time I didn’t understand what he meant. Now I know. Only grown ups are capable of doing “some things.”

  1. Love this photo and the beautiful quote. “We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires and comets inside us”.
children are only mean because they learn from adults. children learn what adults teach them. There is indeed a difference between mean and outright evil, and all the way along we have choices to not replicate mean nor evil but to be kind to others instead.

Magic, someone wise once said, is simply science we dont understand yet. 🙂

  2. Beautiful post….. and I agree with what you said. It is fascinating and inspiring to watch a child grow up who is allowed to keep that magic.

    1. True isn’t it. Reminds me of the question about why our fingers and toes get wrinkled when staying too long in the water. Many people forget that it becomes like that to enhance our grip on things which is/was crucial to survival back then. Most of us forget our primal qualities, instinct and gut feelings.
